Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball History
The Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team history is short but wonderful.
While they only received their name and mascot in 2008, the Oklahoma City Thunder were currently known as the Seattle SuperSonics. Disagreements between team management and Seattle officials about their former stadium, Key Arena, meant that the team was moved to Oklahoma City.
Some argued that OK City was a strange choice for an NBA franchise, but league officials were impressed with the amount of interest in the New Orleans Hornets after that team was forced to play many of its “home” games in Oklahoma City in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
That paved the way for the NBA’s newest team to emerge, while they gave up the rights to the SuperSonics name and colors, leaving the door open for a future team in that location. It should be an interesting chapter in the proud history of the franchise. Go Thunder!
