Basketball's governing body has rejected Greece's appeal of two player suspensions stemming from a brawl in a game against Serbia. Patrick Baumann, FIBA's secretary general, said the punishment given to Antonis Fotsis and Sofoklis Schortsanitis will stand, and the players will miss the first two games of the world championships that open Saturday.

FIBA's decision to suspend Antonis Fotsis and Sofoklis Schortsanitis for their part in last week's brawl in an exhibition game against Serbia was "something unbelievable," Greece coach Jonas Kazlauskas said Friday. FIBA's decision altered Kazlauskas' plans ahead of Saturday's opening game against China at the world basketball championships in Turkey.

Serbia center Nenad Krstic has been suspended for three games for throwing a chair during last week's brawl with Greece. Basketball's governing body said Thursday that three other players will miss two games. FIBA also fined both national federations. Serbia's Milos Teodosic is banned for two games.

Oklahoma City Thunder center Nenad Krstic was suspended for three games in official FIBA competition, including games in the upcoming World Championship, FIBA announced on Thursday. Krstic tossed a chair during a brawl that broke out late in a game between Greece and Serbia. In addition to Krstic's suspension, he was also fined 45,000 Swiss Francs. Fellow Serbian player Milos Teodosic was suspended for two games. The Serbian Basketball Federation was fined 20,000 Swiss Francs.

Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo is the final player to be cut from Team USA's roster for the FIBA World Championship, the team announced on Tuesday. “Rajon came to us and said he was going to withdraw from the team, that he had some family matters to attend to and some things to take care of before the NBA season. He did an outstanding job during our training, we appreciate the effort and commitment he made to our program and he completely has our support," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said in a statement.
